XXII Architectural Design Seminar Monte Carasso

04-17 July 2015

Director: Luigi Snozzi

Instructors: Mario Ferrari / Michele Gaggetta / Giacomo Guidotti / Stefano Moor

Special guest: João Luís Carrilho da Graça

The International Design Seminar plays an important role in Monte Carasso's development and urban planning.  The theme for this twenty-second annual seminar concerns the aggregation of the municipalities forming greater Bellinzona, following on the vision of mutual community planning that was developed during the last two years.

The twentieth annual seminar produced a master plan of the New Bellinzona and a set of six key points that support it.  In light of the curiosity raised when the plan was publicly unveiled to the local mayors, we decided to pursue the concept by taking a closer look, each year, at an area of general interest to the community so that the assumptions of the original master plan could be verified and/or altered.  Therefore, during the twenty-first seminar in July 2014, we added the Semine district to the plan.

This year, after consulting with the local authorities, we decided to take an in-depth look at Pratocarasso.  This area, between Bellinzona and Arbedo, is bordered to the north by Via al Maglio, to the south by Via Vallone, to the east by Viale San Gottardo and to the west by the Ticino River.  After heated debates over Pratocarasso's controversial zoning plan led to a successful popular referendum against the city's proposal, the area was listed in the plan as a special unit awaiting decisions as to its future use.

Plans for the area will have to take account of contemporary issues such as the densification of the entire residential area with an emphasis on qualitative rather than quantitative criteria; new boundaries between the built environment and green spaces; the relationship between residential and public areas; and above all the reconception of the riverside park as the backbone of the New Bellinzona.

The seminar will take the form of a design workshop, led by the director and professor of the course with assistance from architecture instructors.  At the end of the session the teaching staff, with input from João Luís Carrilho da Graça, will publicly critique the participants' designs and award the "Morenal Prize" to the best work.

During the seminar there will be public lectures by Swiss and international architects.  Previous seminars were attended by architects Michele Arnaboldi, Raffaele Cavadini, Pierre-Alain Croset, Aurelio Galfetti, Mario Botta, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Livio Vacchini, Esteve Bonell, Gonçalo Byrne, Bernard Huet, Alvaro Siza, Roberto Masiero, Francesco Venezia, Paulo Mendes da Rocha, Silvia Gmür, Henri Ciriani, Pierre Fauroux, Guillermo Vasquez Consuegra, Vittorio Gregotti and Manuel Aires Mateus; historian Alessandro Fonti; and photographer Gabriele Basilico.

In addition, architects like Aurelio Galfetti, Martino Pedrozzi and Francesco Fallavollita, geographer Gian Paolo Torricelli, and architecture firms Bonetti e Bonetti, Baserga Mozzetti and Canevascini Corecco gave lectures to help participants become familiar with the architectural scene in Ticino.  For this year's seminar, the guest architect will be João Luís Carrilho da Graça.

The seminar has about twenty spaces available.  It is open to students who have finished their second year of architecture at a university or polytechnic institute and to architecture graduates.
