The International Design Seminar plays an important role in Monte Carasso's development and urban planning.

The twentieth annual Seminar produced a masterplan of the New Bellinzona and a set of six key points that support it. In light of the curiosity raised when the plan was publicly unveiled to the local mayors, we decided to pursue the concept by taking a closer look, each year, at an area of general interest to the community so that the assumptions of the original masterplan could be verified and/or altered.

During the XXI edition, the Semine district was integrated into the general plan.

The XXII edition, instead, focused on the Pratocarasso district. The design of the area had to take into account very topical issues such as densification of the entire inhabited area by qualitative criteria before quantity; the redesign of the boundaries between built space and green areas; the relationship between residential areas and public areas, and above all the theme of redefining the relationship with the green space that is thought to be the vertebral column of the new city of Bellinzona. A redesign of the North gate of the city has been proposed.

The XXIII Seminar was concerned with the redesign and clarification of the important missing part of the city: the South gate, trying to define the new relationship between the City of Bellinzona and the “Parco del Piano” integrating all the important and complex infrastructures that characterize the area.

The XXIV International Design Seminar will, in line with what proposed in the last four editions, work to deepen, improve and complete the Masterplan of the new Bellinzona.
Following a first draft of the Masterplan - with its six main points that support it - elaborated in the 2013 edition, deepening the important and central Semine neighborhood in the 2014 edition and redefining the north and south door in 2015 and in 2016, this year the seminar intends to differentiate its research on two themes.

The first will investigate the center of Bellinzona focusing attention on the area between the Motta and Franscini boulevards, considered strategic in the construction of river-city parks. The aim is to consciously reorganize the set of public spaces contained therein and thus to offer a possible alternative to the prevailing tendency towards point and uncoordinated projects. The stadium district, the school district and the planned urban park are some of the spaces that will be the subject of a unitary plan to rejuvenate the transversal experience of the city and connect it through the river to New Bellinzona.

The second theme will extend its research to the relationship that the whole city wants to entertain with the Ticino River and the river park. The true spine of the New Bellinzona, once left the city, crosses the Piano di Magadino up to its mouth, to reach the Maggiore lake. A new vision of the river's built and channeled space will be sought in relation to the various urban and landscape environments that contain it.

The Seminar will take the form of a design workshop, led by the director and professor of the course with assistance from architecture instructors. At the end of the session the teaching staff, will publicly critique the partecipants' designs.

During the Seminar there will be public lectures by Swiss and international architects. Previous Seminars were attended by architects Michele Arnaboldi, Raffaele Cavadini, Pierre-Alain Croset, Aurelio Galfetti, Mario Botta, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Livio Vacchini, Esteve Bonell, Gonçalo Byrne, Bernard Huet, Alvaro Siza, Roberto Masiero, Francesco Venezia, Paulo Mendes da Rocha, Silvia Gmür, Henri Ciriani, Pierre Fauroux, Guillermo Vasquez Consuegra, Vittorio Gregotti, Marco Ortalli, Manuel Aires Mateus, João Luís Carrilho da Graça and José María Sánchez García; historian Alessandro Fonti; and photographer Gabriele Basilico.

In addition, architects like Aurelio Galfetti, Martino Pedrozzi and Francesco Fallavollita, Roberto Briccola, geographer Gian Paolo Torricelli, and architecture firms Bonetti e Bonetti, Baserga Mozzetti and Canevascini Corecco gave lectures to help participants become familiar with both the Ticino and the international architectural scene.
